Endurance challenge for children’s charities

Marc Smith, CEO of Texas Peak (distributor of Brooks, GU and Helly Hansen) and a friend, Deon Rossouw, will be running a Comrades marathon plus half marathon a day for the next seven days – 110km a day – to cover the 770km between Cape Town and the Augrabies Falls.

But that is only a prelude to participating in the Kalahari Augrabies Extreme Marathon, a 250km self-sufficiency (you carry your own gear) race described as the “Mt Everest of trail running” because so few endurance racers complete the event. This 1 000km epic run is in aid of Endure 4 a child, a charity fundraising initiative founded by Smith in 2005 in order to give endurance runners the chance to make a difference to children’s lives. They hope to raise R1-m for charities – which will require 1 000 individuals or groups each donating R1/kilometre. All funds generated will go to the charities and all other costs are being born by the athletes and their sponsors.
